Mineral Survey Plat

Below is a copy of the Mineral Survey Plat for the Ophir Lode Mining Claim, Big Cottonwood Mining District, Mineral District #5, Mineral Survey #117, Lot #153. The Survey dated October 13, 1877, and accepted by the U.S. Surveyor's Office on November 24, 1877. The original claim, located August 5, 1870, was 200 feet wide, and 2200 feet long, running South-West to North-East and encompassing 10.101 acres of ground. It lies just south and adjacent to the Reed & Benson mine on Reed & Benson Ridge.

The Plat shows the discovery marker near the center of the claim just west of the Reed & Benson ridge-line. At the time of the survey, the Ophir was part of the Red & Goodspeed Mining Co. and was being worked by one inclined shaft 75 feet deep and a number of drifts and raises within that shaft. The exact dimensions of any of these workings at the time of the survey are not known.

No mention is made of cabins or structures at the site on the survey plat.
